In other words, Let's say you were running the show at Mattel, and you wanted to recreate the magic from 30 years ago. The main objective being: to sell MOTU/POP retail toys to little kids... the target market is "Children". Like 30 years ago, media helped sell toys... so you'd want to factor that in the equation. Would you go retro? Would you reboot? etc. Would your interests be with the customers, or would you be more company oriented? Would you go beyond action figures and put the MOTU branding on anything and everything? etc, etc.
I know times have changed and kids are more into electronic media than ever before. However, kids still need physical, tangible toys to stimulate their young minds. I don't think MOTU can ever be as magical as it was for us 30+ years ago, but I think MOTU and POP have the potential to win the hearts of modern day small children. The thing is, it would have to be done right in order for it to be a success.
First thing I would do is talk to whoever I needed to, to get a new cartoon series off the ground. I would want it to essentially be in the same style as the FIlmation cartoon, but 10 times better. Better animation, better stories, better everything... but keep the look the same. It could almost be a continuation of the original show from a certain point of view. Most importantly, it would need all the elements that appeal to the modern day 4-9 year old.
The show would need to be aired on television networks at the right times which will make sure young kids see it. From there I have no doubt that MOTU could be as popular as Transformers and TMNT are today. If a new MOTU cartoon works, I would then look into a new POP series aimed at little girls, with crossovers into the new MOTU cartoon.
Like today, along with the new cartoon, a line of MOTU toys would hit the toy isle shelves. I would start small at first to make sure MOTU is a hit with the kids... then I'd expand the toy line. Now the thing is... I would take the now failed MOTU mini concept, and make it a pre-school line of toys in the same style as Imaginext. ALSO a line of figures that appeal to the older boy, something like MOTUC. Depending on the success, I would spread the property into everything else, bedsheets, pillow cases, etc. I would also look into a fully CGI feature film. (not live action)
Also, one of the most important factors that I think made MOTU a success is something so ridiculously simple... Package Design!
I would most definitely go back to MOTU's roots and use the original form factor.
