  • What would your strategy be to bring MOTU back to the mainstream?

In other words, Let's say you were running the show at Mattel, and you wanted to recreate the magic from 30 years ago. The main objective being: to sell MOTU/POP retail toys to little kids... the target market is "Children". Like 30 years ago, media helped sell toys... so you'd want to factor that in the equation. Would you go retro? Would you reboot? etc. Would your interests be with the customers, or would you be more company oriented? Would you go beyond action figures and put the MOTU branding on anything and everything? etc, etc.

I know times have changed and kids are more into electronic media than ever before. However, kids still need physical, tangible toys to stimulate their young minds. I don't think MOTU can ever be as magical as it was for us 30+ years ago, but I think MOTU and POP have the potential to win the hearts of modern day small children. The thing is, it would have to be done right in order for it to be a success.

First thing I would do is talk to whoever I needed to, to get a new cartoon series off the ground. I would want it to essentially be in the same style as the FIlmation cartoon, but 10 times better. Better animation, better stories, better everything... but keep the look the same. It could almost be a continuation of the original show from a certain point of view. Most importantly, it would need all the elements that appeal to the modern day 4-9 year old.

The show would need to be aired on television networks at the right times which will make sure young kids see it. From there I have no doubt that MOTU could be as popular as Transformers and TMNT are today. If a new MOTU cartoon works, I would then look into a new POP series aimed at little girls, with crossovers into the new MOTU cartoon.

Like today, along with the new cartoon, a line of MOTU toys would hit the toy isle shelves. I would start small at first to make sure MOTU is a hit with the kids... then I'd expand the toy line. Now the thing is... I would take the now failed MOTU mini concept, and make it a pre-school line of toys in the same style as Imaginext. ALSO a line of figures that appeal to the older boy, something like MOTUC. Depending on the success, I would spread the property into everything else, bedsheets, pillow cases, etc. I would also look into a fully CGI feature film. (not live action)

Also, one of the most important factors that I think made MOTU a success is something so ridiculously simple... Package Design!
I would most definitely go back to MOTU's roots and use the original form factor.

this is the key thing. I would create 2 video games. 1 for consoles & one for smart phones. the figures would have 2 codes, 1 for each game that unlocked the toy as a playable character or something. the toys have to be part of the game like skylanders.

a cartoon or movie would be nice, but after CN ruined the 200x cartoon. i would put tiny dvds that have the cartoon, included with the toy. (like my little pony: friendship is magic) this would help kids who don't have either video game.

kids play with toys for a smaller period of time, so it would have to be geared at little kids & follow the power rangers model where all the toys are released at once in conjuction with the show/game instead of the old way of producing multiple waves months apart.

If I were running the show, I would commission a new cartoon series and make it a Netflix exclusive. One season with 15 (30 minute) episodes. Market it properly online and make it a big must-see event.

With any new toys, I would keep the 80s retro look for their outfits. They are classic and they continue to work. A great deal of thought went into those original designs by a talented team of professionals. When you stray too far from the source to fit in with the popular comics and toylines of today, you just come off as being generic and unoriginal.

I do tend to agree that a cartoon would be a great 'gateway' to expose the younger generations to this series, it does present some challenges. He-Man is not a consistent series, not like Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman, and other hero series that come out at fairly regular intervals (counting all major game releases, movies, comics, toys, etc.) with various periods of history being the focus.
You could do the usual and jump right to He-Man's era; or start out with some of Queen Marlena's history and her adventures on a new planet with a younger Randor - which I personally would find interesting and would show just how badass they both are. Either way, it would do well to start with something new - something even long-time fans have yet to really have much exposure to. He-Man is an epic adventure; it spans multiple planets and eras between its own characters and with the additions of She-Ra (but it would need to be less blatantly 'girly') and NA, it should start being treated as such.
Format doesn't really matter to me - but CGI styled like Clone Wars or the current TMNT series might get more attention from the kids. Mixing some scenes with 'traditional' elements wouldn't hurt - Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness uses that kind of element to a very nice advantage when they do flashbacks or 'storytelling'.

Internet and TV would cover both methods for exposure - personally I don't get any stations aside from what my rabbit ears can pickup, and I don't have anything like Netflix, so there are times when it's either checking out the internet or just buying a DVD whenever a first season might be released.

Toys need to have appeal to young and old, and be FUN most of all. I've seen a lot of lines going the 'micro' route along with the standard figures, smaller pocket sized toys that fit in the blind grab-bags or multipacks. I'll admit, those things are fun - especially when they do mystery figures, variants, and the like.
Like PhantomZodak said, the Skylanders route would also be a good idea to explore too. Lego's also seem to be pretty popular - and would also just be cool.

Comics can go multiple routes, as they should. Multiple eras, story arcs, crossovers, and presentations. Having one format is boring - different styles and interpretations between the audience 'ages'. Let them grow up with the comics and find different adventures.

Yeah, a new cartoon would be a must. I'd do something along the lines of the most recent TMNT reboot. Actually I agree with all your points

I for one am sick and tired of endless remakes and senseless changes (zombie Rat King, Russian Rocksteady...).

Why not look up to Japanese and just continue the original show?
After all, both MOTU and She-Ra left doors wide open.

You could possibly get the gang back together with MYP, since it was the most recent and everyone is still alive to my knowledge.

It's a little hard to continue where Filmation left off. Lou Schiemer, George DiCenzio or Linda Gary aren't with us anymore. Is there a Filmation without Lou at the helm? And animation isn't what it was. The care and attention that Filmation fans value might not be there anymore, if the continued show is drawn by Korean animators. Any new Filmation cartoon might pale in comparison without that top talent controlling things.

Season one was meh?!! I thought it was great, maybe not the best, but still great for what it was for a relaunched brand!

I can appreciate the story, the weird shadowing and endless twirling of weapons...not so much!

Yeah, some of the shadowing was a bit wierd in the first episodes, and the twirling was a bit an overkill. But the overall action was still great.

I haven't watched tmnt since the the early 90's so I can't comment.

CGI can be a beautiful medium though for all audiences if done right and not too over the top.

Take a look on YouTube of the cinematics and opening scenes of DC universe online, marvel ultimate alliance, and Mortal Kombat vs DC universe, then imagine some MotU characters in it and going on for over an hour.

I know thats just for a video game but I'd like to think that would be pretty bad ass. It wouldn't have to be the greatest story ever told...just a descent story with great graphics, that feels like He-man and I'd at least spend the money to watch it.

I'm not sure what production company to use but the DC animated short films haven't been too horrendous and Mattel has final say on what they approve for the brand.

An epic cartoon or a CGI movie would be the best way to relaunch the brand, how about something in this style:

I know It costs a lot of money to render it in that fashion, but if the story and voice acting were done right, it could capture a lot of audience.

I really think a kid's cartoon would do more for the brand than the live action movie will (assuming they ever make it)
