Not necessarily. I think they are just capitalizing on the fact that there are a lot of great cosplayers out there who love dressing up as She-Ra. Just look at the great responses the cosplayers who post at He-Man World get when they show off their costumes. I think Mattel is just capitalizing on whats popular with the fans.

Darkbeautyrose and Lady Lemon Cosplay would definitely be winners if they took part in this contest!

Should be interesting to see the reactions. I'd love guru to make some crass comment and make an ass of himself

There's a best male overall category? What does Mattel expect? Drag queens dressed as she-Ra?

There's nothing wrong with a good drag show!

I have seen several cosplayers who do opposite sex versions of name characters, primarily either as jokes or political statements (re: regarding sexualized female costumes in comics and video games, etc.), but at least one guy did a really cool movie Jean Grey as a male for no ulterior motive other than it being cool.
Not every beast is tender, especially if there is genius in his making.

You are right, Cap. But you know who is running the this contest...

Regarding me..."Viking" is a fair description.

This pic is a couple months old, the beard is quite a bit longer now...

Wow Dark, I could've easily mistaken you with Amon Amarth's Johan Hegg! Awesome. \m/

Haven't heard that one before - but I can see it based on that pic. I never leave my hair down in public, though, it's just too long. It's usually in a tight braid which probably eliminates the resemblance.
