  • Matty will cease to exist on Dec.31 2016.

    To Our Loyal Collectors,
Thank you for being the world’s most dedicated fans and passionate supporters of MattyCollector.com over the years.

We want to let you know that we have been working on something new and different for you that measures up to your loyalty and devotion.

As of December 31, 2016, we will be shutting down the website as we transition to Super7 to manufacture and deliver the Masters of the Universe and adult collector lines. Subscriptions and orders for 2016 will remain unaffected, and the site will continue to operate through the end of the year. For the past two years, Super7 has proven to be a great partner, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow the Masters of the Universe line. They will unveil the expanded line for 2017 at San Diego Comic-Con.

To help you complete your collections before the end of the year, we’ll be opening the Vault beginning Thursday, July 21 at 9 a.m. PT. All 2014 and 2015 items, and select 2016 items, will be available for sale at that time. They’ll remain in the shop until the end of the year or while supplies last, whichever comes first. For our U.S.-based collectors, any Vault products you buy during San Diego Comic-Con will arrive with free domestic ground shipping.*

We thank you for your dedication and support through the years.

    Sincerely,
    MattyCollector.com

Just saw the email. Interesting stuff. Good time to wash my hands of it all, at last at last.

Lends credence to the rumor that they are already dropping Thundercats after this very small initial offering as well, but I suppose we will find out for sure by the end of this weekend.

That sounds like there's more MotU, let's hope Thundercats as well.

I read all the e-mails and press releases a little bit ago and I don't know what to think.

I do like the idea of them opening the vault on past figures.

No more Digital River is probably a step up, but I'll reserve my judgment until I hear more stuff. Is the MOTUC line totally dead, specifically the vehicles and Snake Mountain?

Sounds like it's not dead at all and will just be handles by Super7. Hopefully they'll do vehicles and SM.

Got an additional email from Super 7 promising big things but no specifics (so we are starting out very TG-esque, IMO). They want money for their animated short (very Mattel-esque). Email ends with a silhouette of a figure...vintage style:

            Hello Matty Collectors!

This is Brian Flynn, owner of Super7, and I just wanted to say how excited we are to expand our relationship with Mattel and Masters of the Universe this year and beyond! We’re looking forward to creating a wonderful array of exciting and unexpected Masters of the Universe products in the years to come.

As some of you may know, we’ve been working with Mattel for a few years now, creating both the retro 3.75” MOTU figures, the M.U.S.C.L.E. MOTU figures, and last year’s SDCC 2015 Skeletor’s Lair special event. Since then, we’ve announced wave 2 of the 3.75” figures, and wave 2 of the M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, which will debut at SDCC 2016.

Speaking of SDCC 2016, our biggest announcement was that while all this was going on, we’ve been working secretly on the first new Masters of the Universe animation in the classic style since 1985 – “The Curse of the Three Terrors”! In trying to be as authentic to the original series as possible, this new animation features original voice actor Alan Oppenheimer reprising his signature role as Skeletor (as well as Mer-Man and Man At Arms) on a new adventure in Eternia. Additionally, we worked with The Power and Honor Foundation to use original backgrounds from the 1984-1985 series, so this new animation is as accurate as possible. We will premiere the “The Curse of the Three Terrors” at 10pm on Wednesday July 20th, at the corner of 8th Ave. and G in downtown San Diego, directly across the street from this year’s Skeletor’s Lair pop-up shop! Afterwards, “The Curse of the Three Terrors” will be available August 1st for download on iTunes and Google Play for $1.99.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zatw9jgnylo

As for new and exciting products, I wonder what other secrets we might have up our sleeves for all of you…?

I do have to say I don't really care whether the Classics line continues in any substantial way, but if I am not getting a Stridor, then everyone Mattel to Super 7 can go...lick...a running, rusty chainsaw.

Yeah, I think I agree with you there. I can't believe we wouldn't get a Stridor. This will probably make Nightstalker sell out quick though, with customizers grabbing dups to make their own.

That's my fallback plan. I don't expect it to be too hard to pull off, even. Doesn't make it OK for them to skip Stridor, though.

            • #9
This is great news. Super 7 has a history of making big, expensive toys that people like Mattel and Hasbro wouldn't touch. They are aimed squarely at the hardcore, and trying new things. They will also team up with other companies and artists to make otherwise unfeasable items. That is all good news for MOTU fans.

These are the guys who should have been doing those giant figures in the first place... Will MOTUC continue with them? Probably not but there's decent chance they'd do an exclusive of some type someday, and an excellent chance of teaming with Mattel or someone else for a SM or Stridor or vehicles.

Of all the years I decided not to go, I choose the one where Super 7 takes over MOTU and it would've done me good business wise to be there. Not least because I helped concieve that portfolio. I am sure they have plenty of artists. I think they are in with the Mondo guys so have access to great artists there too. Still though, ya cannot help but wonder what would happen if you were there.

Super 7 taking over MOTU is quite mental and begs loads of questions. Let us see where it all goes. Will they be making more classics?

                          Toy News International:
Yesterday we reported to you how Mattel announced they would be shutting down MattyCollector.com soon and that Super7 would be continuing their collector lines.

Well we now have some more details to share with you about this latest development. Pixel-Dan, who had a chance to talk with Super7 owner Brian Flynn last night who told him they would be continuing the Masters of the Universe Classics line. The Four Horsemen will continue to sculpt the figures and they already have several Filmation sculpts ready for 2017.

ThunderCats however is a different story. That line appears to be dead after the figures coming out this year are released by Mattel through their subscription service. According to Flynn, the licensing for that brand is just to complicated to deal with, so he doesn't think they will be able to do any thing on that front.

Masters Of The Universe is actually owned by Mattel whereas ThunderCats are not. So for those hoping to at the very least complete the entire original core team of ThunderCats, the chances of seeing a Tygra and Cheetara figure seem slim to none at this point.
                          Pixel-Dan:

On MOTU Classics: I talked to Brian from Super7 last night at Skeletor's Lair. They plan to continue the Classics line. They will still use the Horsemen, and he mentioned that there were a few Filmation characters that the Horsemen had ready for a possible 2017 line, so they will start there. He mentioned they plan to create new characters too.

Mattel is out, though. They basically licensed the MOTU property to Super7. So with the end of MattyCollector comes the end of Mattel's Classics line.

I have an interview scheduled with Brian Friday, so I'll be getting as many details as I can on video at that time.

Oh, and ThunderCats sounds like it's finished. I guess the license is a little too Co plated for Super7 to take on. So it seems we are only getting the 2016 figures that were already announced, and nothing more.

I know how you feel, Crespo. This is like when NECA had to cancel Wave two of TMNT or when they didn't finish their SFIV line. ThunderCats can't catch a break! I can expect Bandai to drop the ball, but Mattel?!!! Man, it's a good thing that Mattel licensed off MOTU to Super 7.

The sad thing is that, if they gave us 12 figs next year, they could hit all the A list wants. It would literally be a license to print money. Hell they could do it as an all in sub with no day of sales and it would be successful.
