  • Issue with translucent/transparent plastic on the newer figures

We all know that Roboto and Green Goddess and Photog all have issues with their translucent/transparent plastic. These were the older figures and we were told by Scott (aka LieGuru) that these have been fixed. Have there been any reports for that the transparent plastic of Hydron, Slushhead, Captain Glenn has issues, or the plastic body of Icer and Spirit of Hordak has cracked? Does anyone know?

Icer and SOH won't have issues, they are simply made from translucent not transparent plastic (as is Goddess' limbs), different materials. Goddess' crotch was likely a Polystyrene material, as are parts of Roboto, Slush, Photog....etc... Polystyrene doesn't use contain plasticizer, which makes plastic pliable but it makes it cloudier depending on the amount used.... Icer and SOH are still fully ABS and PVC, just translucent, meaning the plastic was dyed with clear coloring instead of color beads or something similar.

Those brittle ass CD cases are made from Polystyrene....

Too many times translucent gets confused with crystal clear transparent, typically way different materials are used. Hasbro makes perfectly good Transparent plastic, likely it's made from Polypropylene, that is a tad less clearer than polystyrene, but is a hell of a lot more durable. Apparently Mattel hasn't managed to get that part right yet.

LEGO also makes great polystyrene plastic that survives for years and even decades if kept under good conditions, however they don't go cheap on materials or factories like Mattel does!

And I agree, SOH and Icer should last us for a while.

Lego plastic is actually ABS, and the clear is a polycarbonate, not polystyrene. There is however clear ABS as well, and it's pretty sturdy, so neither materials are what Mattel apparently is using as the figures unfortunate enough to have whatever plastic they use, are brittle or crack easily. Scott keeps blaming the Goddess error on manufacturing....so, does that mean Roboto and Photog were also affected by the sonic welder too?

I don't know in the end what Mattel is doing, or what they are using, but manufacturing error excuse aside (I mean if they knew the figure was defective because of the error....they still sold the defective product anyway....) the plastic they use is proven to be more brittle than the stronger transparent plastics used in the industry, so it is none of those they are using.

I stand corrected, what I meant to say is polucarbonate for the clear parts. In the old days LEGO used to use cellulose acetate before switching to ABS, that's why many of the old clear plastic became cloudy looking.

And yes, LEGO is mostly made out of ABS these days.

Has anyone else heard of any of the issues with the transparent helmets then? Is that the same plastic that would break?

To me, Light Hope looks to be made in the same style as Spirit of Hordak and Icer. I don't think we are going to have any breakage issues with the figure.
