  • MOTU Mega Construx Sighting Thread

As they are so hard to come by, thought I would start a thread for Mega Construx found in the wild. Please specify store and country.

Luckily, I also have the very first sighting: All three Skeletor head sets and flocked Panthor at Walmart in the good ol' USA. Skeletor heads are $10 each and Panthor is a shocking $15 for just flocked Panthor and yet another Skeletor with battle axe. No character stand, just the same large jagged piece that came in the Roton and Point Dread sets that serve as bases for the cats, this time in purple.
Not every beast is tender, especially if there is genius in his making.

    Does online shopping count?
I got all my MOTU Mega Construx thus far from Amazon, eBay and Walmart (Yes I know the evil corps and all, but if you're struggling with money, it helps), however I might get the Skeletor heads from BBTS or EE.
I'd recommend avoiding eBay and only shop there if you have to, like finding the SDCC exclusive Battle Bones set or those hard to come by mini figures. And from my experience, if you're patient enough, you'll find most of the sets discounted 20%-40% off eventually with free shipping.

Someone said from the other board that his Walmart has discounted/cleared the Point-Dread/Talon-Fighter set for only $5.00!!!? That’s like $45 off!
I wish I had a Walmart around for just for those crazy deals, anyhow it’s a good idea to check yours when you have the chance.

One place in Canada that was a source for the individual mini figures was the Superstore grocery stores. I’m not sure if that’s still the case with newer waves, as I don’t have one close by.
When I used to work in Ottawa I was able to get the first couple of waves from the Superstore in Kanata.

Crazy that a freaking grocery store was the most reliable place to get some MOTU toys with a Walmart and a Toys R Us just down the road.....

If you live in the US, the new 5 MOTU MC mini figures can be pre-ordered as a pack directly from Amazon.

            Got 'em, thanks Mech!

What is this version of Roboto supposed to be? A mini comic coloration or something?

Hmm, as much as I liked that Monster Fighter line in its time, things now are a bit more advanced interns of part selection and the building techniques LEGO utilizes in their sets based on the age bracket they recommend for their audience... Given what I know, MOTU would've been made in terms of building difficulty for older kids and adults, ages 8+ for the smaller sets, and 10+ for bigger sets up to 18+ for hefty and complex sets (Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain for example). I would recommend looking into the current Ninjago, Monkie Kid, and Star Wars lines to get an idea of what you'd have expected from LEGO's MOTU.
I know MOTU's characters are the major selling points for any MOTU toy line, so vehicle sets and playsets may take the backseat when it comes to the brick medium, but having said that, I think Mega Construx has done a good work so far, actually more than what I've expected! :-)

Having collected all of the Hidden Side line, I am not sure I can agree there's any vast difference in the few years between them (I mean, the castles are virtually identical builds, and outside the multi-hundred dollar creator sets I have seen nothing that compares to the Monster Hunters Haunted House build [I have the 2020 Haunted House as well, but have not had time or inclination to unbox and build it]) - but what do I know, I don't bother with more popular or licensed LEGO lines like those you mentioned and have not a clue how they are built.

In any event, here is what I should have said: LEGO is LEGO, and can be identified on sight. No matter whether it is in-house or licensed, LEGO style and builds are immediately identifiable for what they are, and that applies to literally every era of LEGO. All things LEGO are "X Theme or License Adapted to LEGO." I have no interest in MOTU through the lens of LEGO. I prefer Mega's reverse approach of adapting the building toys to the theme. Does that make sense?

You're right about most of what you've just said, and I have nothing against your opinion, but there are differences between the building techniques utilized in a lot of the age target sets and how the individual LEGO designers approach them with their teams. LEGO does what LEGO does because there is a template of sort of how the company approaches its products, nonetheless if you follow different lines and different themes, you can tell there is a different style and building techniques used in every theme. You cannot see similarities for example between Friends (The largely girl friendly theme) and Ninjago, they're vastly different, but if you compare Friends with some of the Disney sets you can see some similarities in the overall approach, but still different because of the budget allocated and licensed restrictions with the Disney sets.

Ninjago and Monkie Kid on the other hand are very close to one another in terms of style and builds in general, but f you compare the Ninjago movie sets with the regular Ninjago line, you can tell the difference, even with the regular Batman sets and the LEGO Batman movie sets the are big differences.

BTW Ninjago, Hidden Side, Monkie Kid, Friends, Elves, Creator and Creator Expert (Or 18+) are all original LEGO IP sets. ;-)

Those figures look great. Despite my disdain for the Filmation cartoon, I’ve always liked that colour scheme for Trap Jaw (I still like the vintage toy colours better).
This is an occasion where the fact Canadian retail lags behind might benefit me…. I’ve got to lay off purchases until at least October (long story), so hopefully by the time these figures are available in Canada I’ll have my finances back in order and won’t miss out on any MOTU figures, including these little guys.

Sighting: Target has the Skeletor head playsets, hopefully this is an indication that they will be picking up the whole line.

New Product: The Target assortment of Skeletor head playsets consists of He-Man Jet Sled (old), Trap Jaw Laser Cannon (old) and Zodac Scuba Attack (new, and not even on the Mega Construx website). This version of Zodac has white gloves and VERY dark grey boots, loincloth and helmet highlights. Comes with his traditional pistol, but no chest armor (the scuba gear replaces it). Skeletor head is gold with red eyes and slightly metallic grape purple hood. Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the heads up, I got me one of each of those sets from Amazon, but I still want extra two copies of each... That being said, I haven't found the time (or mood) to build them yet (Like sooo many other LEGO sets that I have)!

I've heard about CG. I like it a lot but WOW that is a price hike. Glad I got it on initial release. If they make a Snake Mountain and ask that much, I will most likely pass. Mega's pricing structure was already all over the map and since Mattel bought them you can definitely tell the tendency to gouge has grown much stronger.

Yeah, Mega Construx for most people will remain a knockoff brick building brand, yet Mattel has started asking premium prices almost like what LEGO does!... Currently CG at Amazon is going for $333 and it keeps fluctuating up to $400 depending on the seller! Honestly, I don't know if CG is still in production or not, but it's still listed on MC's official site as a current product!

Well, I don't mean to imply they are somehow "less than" or a knockoff...but the very simple fact is they are not quite up to the quality levels of Lego, either...

I only paid 250 about three years ago, so that is not unreasonable given inflation/pandemic/etc.

I agree, and it if goes on sale at one point it will even be better!

I got mine in 2019 from Walmart online for $190 plus tax. And I think it went even way further than that for a short period of time.

I’ve been holding out for a sale for a long time now. Castle Grayskull is $300 here in Canada, and I haven’t seen it go on sale once since it’s released. Maybe it has gone on sale here for a bit, but if it has I’ve missed the sale each time

                          Yeah I hear you Croc.
Back in the day, we used to see lots of discounts on the bigger expensive brick based sets especially on LEGO, but now it's becoming very hard to find deals on those ($200+) sets anywhere, especially the adult focused sets.
I have a sizable list of those expensive sets that I'm hoping to buy before they get retired, but then again I don't have thousands of dollars to spare at the moment!... So, either you limit your selection and choices significantly, or find an extra full time job just for your collectables and an extra storage space to waste your money on!

Nice! Looks like the back of Skeletor's head is a build that recreates the Slime Pit. Nice idea and, IMO, the best use of the Skeletor heads yet. Mega is really knocking some of these out of the park!
