  • Are you enjoying MOTU: Revelations? (Spoilers inside)

I’m curious what actual MOTU fans feel about this show. YouTube is nothing but a cesspool of click baiting hate (review channels with the most views are almost always the ones who find fault with everything. The more bile they spew, the more views they get) and 9 times out of 10 only gives you one viewpoint, so I’d rather see what people here have to say.

…. I happen to be enjoying the series so far. Based on the past few months, you can’t believe a word out of Kevin Smith’s mouth, so I don’t believe Adam is dead at the end of episode 5, just injured and can be brought back at some point. The focus is looking to be all on Teela, but my hope is that Adam isn’t dead and that the rest of the season is trying to get the Power Sword back so He-man can return.
I didn’t mind the Teela-centric episodes because to me, He-man’s sacrifice would have been worthless if the very next episode Adam/He-man was found. At least it took until the end of episode 4 to find Adam, not like some shows/movies where a ‘big’ sacrifice is made only to be undone in the exact same episode/movie…
I liked the cliffhanger at the end of episode five, we have Skelegod and a (potentially) fatally wounded Adam to end the show. I’m looking forward to the next episode’s release.

I've only watched the five episodes once, and I thought it was a bit choppy at times and a bit rushed, so I need to rewatch it again to see I how I feel about the flow of the story, but from the get go, I thought the MYP series were written better and direction was a lot more concise where the characters and the action sequences were the focal point of the show.

As for this series, I liked the plot for what it is thus far, and the animation was compelling and attractive, but the dialogue was somehow poor at times, and direction could've been a lot better in my humble opinion.
As for the story, I reserve my judgment until I see the whole season with part 2 to conclude what I think of it objectively... But thus far I wasn't too impressed, the same Hollywood crap I've seen in other series is bleeding into this one as well!... No need to revamp the well known established characters that have been around for ages just to follow certain agendas and/or to grow a new audience with certain narratives and mindset! You always can add new characters for that to fit the bill if you have to!

Also, the series should have been action driven, not drama driven IMHO. I wanna see battles while making the characters living their roles in the series, not killing off some loved characters from the beginning just to make it look dark and dramatic, that's just some poor rushed writing and direction.

So far, I'm not sure who's this show is for, the older audience who grow up on MOTU, or the casual Netflix audience who's already been bombarded with so many brain numbing shows, or for the toy geeks in general?

So, I chose (Need to wait for full season for final verdict) from the poll.

First off it's a Netflix show so there's certain boxes that have to be checked. I went into it knowing He-man would be sidelined and all of the rumors basically saying, it's the Teela story. So I was able to say to myself that this is a revamp and not a sequel or continuation...more like an almagam of all previous medium. The direction of some of the characters were somewhat questionable like say Tri-Klops but I was able to enjoy the art style and some of the fan service. I looked at it like this is Teela's Quest and I didn't hate it. I also kinda observed it like a fanfic and it helped me excuse some of the poor dialogue or lazy writing or killing off characters to become dark and dreary. I will have to wait for the rest of the episodes to say my final verdict!

I'm shocked by how much HE-MAN has been sidelined in this (and Skeletor too). It is a mixed bag, to be sure. Makes me wish they had just done a proper continuation of the MYP cartoon.

Oh that would’ve been one of my favorite wishes to see MYP make a come back!
But the toy line could’ve been harder to make due to the unique sculpting of each figure unless they’d go with the Classics route and 200Xing the Origins line with unique parts here and there!

They were actually on point about alot of things. Our Teela would've wrecked Skeletor's army after He-man and Skeletor appeared to have died. Randor also would have never threatened to kill Duncan unless as a rouge. It would have been way more interesting for Teela to go on her journey of becoming the new Sorceress while Adam delt with his secret being revealed instead of it being the Teela show. I almost can't wait until Teela lifts the sword and becomes super Saiyan Kristen Nun and we find out most of the Masters were killed in that 2 min battle.

I loved it. I think it’s easily the best animated series the brand has ever had. I was happy to see a more mature take on the property, and it was the first time I ever felt genuinely moved by these characters. I was also really glad to have other characters take the spotlight. With as big and diverse as the characters of Eternia are I’m kind of bummed to see so many fans are really just in it for He-man and Skeletor.

I'm glad to see people like you are enjoying it and not shying about it, however don't you think the MYP/200X show already gave such spotlights for the surrounding characters in every episode? (assuming that you've watched it)

From what I remember, characters like Orko, Man-E-Faces, Buzz-Off, Ram Man, Teela, Evil-Lyn, Stratos, Mechanek, Stratos, Trap Jaw, Two-Bad, Whiplash, Roboto, Stinkor, Tri-Klops, Beast Man, Mer Man, Clawful, King Grayskull, King Hssss and his snake men, Kobra Khan, Zodak, Keldor, and Adam just to name some (besides the main two characters of course) all had episodes dedicated to them elaborating on their backgrounds and their dilemmas...

I think what Revelation is doing is rather focusing on the dramatic aspect of the story by a lead character or two, and have their journey or quest showcases the other characters as elements of this adventure of theirs.
Of course that could change after the bombastic negative feedback we've seen from the audience thus far!... And now a lot of the YT reviewers started comparing the show to The Last Jedi movie!

Aside from the controversial story and some character designs, I believe the animation itself is great and beautiful to watch. I've started my second viewing of the show and honestly I'm getting more into it, enjoying the art details and climatic shots.

Hi guys and gals. It’s been years since I’ve posted anything but here’s my 10 cents on this ridiculous situation. It’s a cartoon. It’s an animated story of a universe that never actually existed. I’m not sure how humans capable of thought can’t accept that. I’ve read comments that say this show has destroyed their childhood. Destroyed it really? You’re not a child anymore. It’s not like we went back in time and told you Santa doesn’t exist all over again. Another comment, they took away a role model to boys. Role model? It’s a cartoon. They emasculated all the men. Really. I saw those Same men continue to do manly things to include fight, build, protect, and sacrifice themselves for the group. They killed he-man. Really because Adam is still alive. Yes he’s wounded but not dead. Teela is a lesbian. Not one shot of her kissing any woman is in the show. She hugs andra. Guess I’m a homosexual now because I hugged my guy friends. Well her hair is clearly lesbian. I didn’t know hairstyles now determined your sexual preferences. Other comments include, yeah they’re just pushing their agenda. What agenda?
I watched the entire part 1 and it’s what I thought I would be. Just another animated show of a franchise I like. I think it’s great. Maybe not everything that I would have wanted but that’s why I’m not a writer. The lengths that some of these, what I can only call fanatical psychopaths are going to are incredible. These so called fans want Mattel to go bankrupt, Netflix canceled, Kevin smith dead, just to name a few. Well in the end I guess what these lunatics want is for motu to be out of retail and media once again. They just might get their wish then they’ll be crying over exactly what they wanted. I know sone of you are going to trash what I posted I could really care less since I don’t have motu determine how I live but rather I treat motu as an entertainment part of my life.

Great to have you back posting Jsting. :-)
                It's a good read....

As for the Agenda part of your argument, in general people are basing it on other shows and movies they've watched in the last few years. Also some of those movie and show "creators" actually have admitted it to their own agendas publicly before, without an apology!

You see, the creators are generally artists and they use the mediums they're working on to reflect and express their own work, experiences and messages on it just like any musician, poet or a painter around, and a lot of the times, the studios they're working for/with, push their own (political/social) agendas into these pop cultural mediums like TV shows, movies, comics and what have you, to influence their own audiences (and the public) with certain elected and selected social and political themes just like the other mainstream medias and state controlled outlets out there.

You might see Revelation as a cartoony enjoyable entertaining show (which it is for the most part), but others sometimes question the motives behind its themes and they way it was written and directed, just like any other things in life, and believe me, there is sooo much of this crap going on already and it's nothing new.

Of course, a lot of the feedback on this show has been also over exaggerated by some reviewers to gain more subscriber and viewership (money), and a lot of their followers just love it and want more of this drama...

Nice to see you back Jsting. I was also very disappointed by this show. Kevin Smith totally lied to the fans, and did a bait-and-switch. Adam is a wimp compared to the 2002 and Filmation series. The weird religion/cult thing with Tri-Klops didn't feel right at all. They should have just called it "Teela's Quest" or something, instead of Revelation. Fans just feel lied too.

This article just came up on my Google homepage and it's from Variety so I thought I'd share. It got me thinking about some of the root of the drama and I have a question to ask everyone...

For anyone who has watched all 5 episodes, do you now consider it a continuation or a reimagination of sorts?

I haven't read the Variety article yet, but I've watched all the 5 episodes twice so far, and I think it's a bit of both, a continuation and reimagination of the lore.

Things like Preternia and Subternia being heaven and hell is surely something new and awkward at the same time. The same thing with Castle Grayskull being just a magical illusion of The Hall of Wisdom is also weird and a new interpretation of the Mythos. Orko's background differs from MYP and Filmation is also new... Yet, the main story and the characters are the same in a way, at least until the death of He-Man and the destruction of the Orb!

To be fair, the worst part of the show so far is actually Teela herself, not just the redesign of her character, but also her attitude, and her lines are so bitchy, arrogant and nonsensical at times for a captain and a leader! Also the actress behind her character didn't sell her well IMHO.
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: BTW, I just finished reading the article, and at the very end they say Adam/He-Man will make a comeback, but it looks like Teela will be the lead character of the show meanwhile... I hope they'd rewrite some/most of show in the second season (After part 2 from season 1).

The thing is they've started the show in the wrong direction from the start, and the things we've witnessed should've been in season 3 or 4, especially after the 20-40 years absence from TV.
Let the characters simmer a bit with the audience again, make the adventures and the action bold enough to grab the very hungry audience before you play hard with their emotions in the manner they've done!

Poor planning and poor writing. I hope part 2 will pickup the pieces quick enough, and redirect the show in a better route.

I thought the show was great. Although I can’t understand some of the complaints I accept that they’re valid. But it’s all in each individuals interpretation. I don’t compare this series to filmation, 200x, new adventures or comics. I take it for face value. I also don’t listen to ppl like Kevin smith. He has a job to do and that is sell the crap out of this series no matter what lies. This is why anyone that says or comments well he lied to us, no he lied to you. Don’t include me in your argument. He didn’t lie to me since I didn’t listen to anything that came out of his mouth. I heard it but I didn’t listen. Now a lot of what was in this series was built by a person that I detest more than anyone who has ever worked on the property and that is Scott nutlick. Unfortunately some of his crazy concepts made it into this series. Oh well. So be it. I think the second part of the show will have teela regret her behavior and the way she handled the situation but it’ll bring Adam to understand it’s not the sword that gave him the power but rather the power s and has always been inside of him. I think we’re going to see some amazing battles between he man and skeletor. To me, all of this drama has been sparked by the last 5 years of politics initiated by one side to divide this country. It worked as it’s now reflected in every aspect of life that now includes cartoons. Cartoons. I wish we could go back to a time where all we did was talk about how we hated seeing orko apparently dies fighting scareglow without an agenda behind it. Or how teela totally changed after Adam died without an agenda. Or how he man and skeletor died without an agenda. The fact that anyone would even consider there being an agenda proves how politics has infiltrated this great escape vessel known as cartoons. Please by no means is this an attack on anyone here just a point of view from a nobody. Thanks.

Great to see you posting here again Jsting.

Like you, I’ve also enjoyed the first 5 episodes. I understand the complaints, and I’m not going to say the first 5 episodes were perfect by any means.
For instance, I think it would have been better to prolong the first epic battle into the first two episodes, giving us more He-man screen time, as well as more screen time (or at least some screen time) for so many of the beloved characters from this universe. Ram Man, Stratos, Beast Man, Trap Jaw, etc. would have been nice to see.

I’m also annoyed by that Ted Baisille (sp)? guy’s comments regarding Clamp Champ, referring to him as just some guy with a clamp who’s Randor’s bodyguard.
In this day and age of inclusiveness, here is a golden opportunity to showcase an original black character that really hasn’t been given his due. He’s the King’s personal bodyguard, so you’d think he could be portrayed as the best of the best of the Eternian Guard, right along side the Captain of the Guard. Never appeared in MYP or Filmation, it’s time for Clamp Champ to shine.
Anyways, once part 2 is released I do hope the show brings in more characters so the complaints about it being so Teela focused (which I can’t argue with) can come to an end.

I totally agree with you about Clamp Champ. Mattel went out and made Repli-Cat so they should've done He-bro too instead of blackfacing or race swapping King Greyskull or whatever you call it. We didn't even get Veena. And their Pre-Eternia was an ample chance to create characters to fill the void of equal representation. Wundar and Vikor don't really have a counterpart and they missed their chance to have us talking about new female characters right there. I too enjoyed it for what it was but there definitely was alot of lazy writing just to fit their plot and move their story forward.

New Variety article about the show and the backlash, in which Smith plays the "No True Fan" card:

“It’s been interesting, seeing who truly is a hardcore fan,” he said. “Because anybody that’s like, ‘Oh, man, there’s not enough He-Man’ or something like that, doesn’t understand the show that we based it on.
                    So that's...infuriating.

Also, Smith and others involved with the show are trying again to tell us it isn't what it appears to be and we will all just love the second half. Which only serves to make me wonder just how bad it is going to get.

I mean 200X is what it is. I loved the toys and redesigns, but the show was kind of typical of the MYP style and I didn’t care for any of their cartoons. I wasn’t a fan of the simplistic storytelling, a lot of the voices annoyed me, and I hated the incessant weapons spinning and cheesy fight animations. But to put it simply it’s not the sort of thing I can watch and enjoy as an adult. Revelation is.

And it did something no other He-man related cartoon has done. It made me care about the characters. To me there’s just nothing comparable. This is the first time I feel like the property was done justice in animation. It hits the mark so perfectly for me I really can’t get not liking it. So the backlash has been head scratching.

And I think I don’t get it because I didn’t grow up with Filmation, and didn’t like it when I saw it as an adult. So I guess it’s kind of like asking people why they don’t enjoy a piece of great cinema when their favorite movie (nom ironically) is The Room. And it’s something I haven’t witnessed in other fandoms. Like TF fans love the designs and lore of G1 but will also be the first to tell you the original cartoon is pretty awful in many ways. Same with G.I. Joe.

But MOTU fans are so hung up on purity to that original cartoon. I almost feel like the nostalgia is so strong it makes doing anything decent with the property a futile effort. Because the original show is so bad that anything with a legitimate plot, stakes, or believable character personalities is going to be seen as “crapping on it.” Because yeah characters would never behave realistically in Filmation. It’s saccharine and aimed at 5 year olds. So yeah THAT Randor would hug it out with the man who kept a secret from him and put his son in danger that eventually lead to his death, rather than banish him. Those characters would never do these things because they are completely unrealistic and have zero depth or personality.

So how much longer is Netflix planning to drag this failure out? When will the last few episodes be released? I'm mostly looking forward to it ending so we can put the whole nightmare behind us...

They say (Entertainment Weekly) the second part is already done and ready for Netflix to release it whenever they see fit, probably before the end of the year!... And who knows, probably when the new 3D animated flick is out on Sep-16th?

I wasn’t a fan of the simplistic storytelling, a lot of the voices annoyed me, and I hated the incessant weapons spinning and cheesy fight animations. But to put it simply it’s not the sort of thing I can watch and enjoy as an adult. Revelation is.

And it did something no other He-man related cartoon has done. It made me care about the characters. To me there’s just nothing comparable. Thanks again for sharing your elaborated thoughts with us Battle_Brak... However, I think Revelation part one could've been written and directed better to please more viewers IMHO, and I think the plot was very rushed and smothered with some lazy writing especially at the very beginning for them to reach the intended objective... Nonetheless, I'm still holding my final judgment until I see part two.

I personally didn't grow up watching the Filmation MOTU show either, and when I got the big DVD set 12-13 years or so, I thought it was a little silly for my taste, and it didn't represent what I've enjoyed in the mini comics when I was a kid, however I've enjoyed very much the colorful backgrounds and some of the rotoscoped actions in it. MYP/200X was a lot closer to what Ive imagined MOTU would be. That said, I can see why the majority of the fans of both series were angry and disgruntled with Revelation!

BTW, I haven't encountered that many people who disliked the original G1 Transformers and original G.I. Joe cartoons! But then again, I normally don't engage with that many Millennials and Zoomers discussing the 80's shows, toys and music!

At 37 I’m an “elder millennial”. I didn’t grow up with Filmation because it just wasn’t available on TV where I lived. So I got my lore from mini comics, the audio tapes and the Golden storybooks. But Ive been a fan since the original toyline.

I also got to see animatics and concept art really early on since I work on the brand. I just thought, “this is so awesome it will blow everyone away.”

It’s really only on boards like this that I see a lot of hatred. Every fan I know personally loved Revelation. So I almost have to feel like it’s a very loud minority drowning out other voices. Like seriously not a single fan I know in real life even said they were mildly disappointed. The consensus seems to be they nailed it. But on internet groups you’d think the entire fandom hates it.

Wether you agree with the internet or not, it's still an extension of the fandom to a certain degree... Forget the opinions of forums like this one where hardcore fans normally resides, what about the opinions of the Rotten Tomatoes audience and their ratings for example?

I'm not saying the internet is always a true reflection of the reality, but it certainly can be when there is a popular opinion from the people who've followed the source material for quite sometime... You say the consensus says that they've nailed it, what consensus may I ask, and what type of data that was collected and gathered to reach such a conclusion?

I'm just curios... Because I've worked also on certain IPs in the toy industry, and what I've seen and experienced was an eye opener for sure!

I meant the consensus amongst fans I know personally. I literally don’t know a single person who didn’t like it among my IRL friends. But I know there is a cultural and political component that has driven people to hate the show because of perceived agendas. And if that’s really all it boils down to I wouldn’t see those reactions personally.

I think it’s telling that RT opened audience reviews a couple hours early and hundreds of negative reviews poured in before the show was even up on Netflix. I also think the huge gulf between critics reviews and audience scores is telling.

Yeah I get it, but your friends' opinions aren't necessarily a true measure of peoples' reactions about the show; at least online, and what I mean by online, is the various social media outlets including the YouTube comments, fan websites and forums, and of course it's all subjective IMO... Also in real life, people tend to hide their true feelings about certain issues or opinions just to avoid being labeled this and that, while online they can say whatever they wanna say especially when their true identities are hidden from the public and they're not subjected to censorship or trolling!

I think we'd know sooner or later how this show will measure up especially in the toy isles because that its true objective; selling toys, specifically the Revelation line!

As for the Rotten Tomatoes's critics ratings, I think they're often unbalanced and sometimes don't make a lot sense; to me at least, but then again, I rate things based on my own personal taste. For example I saw a lot of hate in regards to the new Netflix MOTU 3D series already (Just from that little trailer alone!), however I really liked what I saw so far and I'm looking forward to it, but that doesn't mean I must be right and everyone is wrong!

Thanks again for sharing your opinion here, it makes this place a little more interesting, that's for sure, and hopefully you keep on posting.

Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic do not support your assertions. Not even remotely. Telling given that RT cannot even reach a 40% audience approval rating when they are known for trimming negative reviews.

RT and Metacritic audience scores are notoriously unreliable since the trend of review bombing began. Scroll through those negative reviews and see how many of them actually note anything of substance about the show. Only a very small minority discuss the direction, writing, acting, or animation. Most of them are people just mad that a man was “sidelined” for a woman.
